Did you know we all have an unconscious bias?

We’re drawn to people who think, look and behave like us. This can have an impact on how we work with others, teach or lead our teams.

Unconscious bias can also affect the relationships teachers and TAs have with the children in their class. As well as the aspirations they have for them.

Perhaps you’ve heard a teacher explain that a child won’t ever be at the expected level because their parent never reads with them at home?  Or you’ve overheard a group chatting in the staffroom about the next child from that family joining the school?

There’s nothing we can do to stop our unconscious bias. But there are things we can do to recognise biased thinking and behaviours, and create conscious inclusion. Even better, once we notice it, we can challenge it and create more inclusive learning environments.
