The Psychology of Humour and Laughter with Coleg Gwent
Our former headteacher and now educational consultant, Sarah Creegan, recently visited Newport to work with 600 or so people from 3 different faculties at Coleg Gwent.
Each of the three days started with a keynote session on The Psychology of Humour and Laughter, followed by a FLIP-it Thinking workshop.
Having a laugh is always lovely, but why else is it important to build fun into lessons with college students? As the Coleg Gwent team now know, it helps them to:
- Learn faster and retain knowledge – especially if humour is linked to the concept being taught.
- Regulate - because having a laugh at the beginning of a lesson helps increase dopamine and reduce cortisol levels for those students who have had a tricky morning.
- Feel like they belong - especially with those ‘Do you remember when…?’ moments.
- Build resilience and keep things in perspective.
With teaching commitments finished for the year, everyone could have had their eye on the beach, but no! Engagement was high, and feedback was overwhelmingly positive. 98% of people who attended Sarah’s workshops and keynotes rated them highly, with comments such as:
- "I'm going to rethink how I make my lessons more fun."
- "This has helped me remember why I do what I do,"
And our overall favourite:
- "This is the best CPD we've ever had!"
