Building resilience with the team at The Sheffield College
With a mission to ‘transform lives through learning’, The Sheffield College is a further and higher education college for young people and adults.
On the 7th November, they invited Laura Drury from Laughology to participate in one of their leadership days to bring the team together through some fun whilst also giving them some tools to help them think differently and think positively too. In turn, this will equip leaders to build their own resilience and strong relationships in ways that can be used to support those they work with.
Their chosen session was our ever-popular FLIP it Thinking - one that’s very interactive and offers many practical tools. The session's foundation was to encourage people to raise awareness of their thinking patterns, not only in what they are thinking, but also how they perceive situations (what beliefs, values and memories might be influencing them), whilst recognising that those perceptions vary massively from person to person.
Because of this, FLIP-it Thinking not only helps them to build resilience but also creates rapport in the room by encouraging curiosity and understanding for one another instead of judgment and blame.
The group had some useful conversations to help them identify the seemingly trivial thoughts that, left unattended, could end up being incredibly unhelpful or could prevent someone from taking action. Then, later in the session, reflecting on how those thoughts could be ‘FLIP’ped to something more helpful, spurring on action.
Also, they created the biggest ever ‘Pull My Finger’ circle known to Laughology! For those of you who know or have any school-aged children rest assured, it’s not that game. However, it generates a lot of laughs, which is also ideal for building those relationships.
