Unconscious bias training at Christchurch Primary

Laughology

Christchurch Primary in Sefton treated their staff to a Happy-Centred Schools twilight session looking at unconscious bias and FLIP-it Thinking. All staff attended, not just teachers, as Christchurch value their whole team, and this made for some great discussions and plenty of laughs, sharing stories and taking part in HCS activities that brought the content to life.

We all have unconscious bias, and the people at Christchurch Primary were really interested in learning what this is, why it happens, and how it can impact their behaviours with each other, parents and the children. For example, they talked about how, subconsciously, they could have certain expectations of a child if they had already worked with a sibling from the same family.

We can’t completely eradicate unconscious bias – it’s a human safety thinking pattern. Awareness is key, though, and the session helped the Christchurch team to create this.

Kerry Leigh also introduced them to FLIP-it Thinking to help them cope with the busy and challenging demands of school life where no two days are ever the same, and humour and resilience are great tools for empowering themselves and each other.
