Menopause awareness at Briars Hill and St Margaret’s Schools
It’s so encouraging that schools and organisations are seeking out ways to support those going through menopause in the workplace, as they represent just over 50% of the workforce. Statistics show that 1 in 10 women leaving employment do so because of menopause - and that’s just the women who are comfortable enough to admit it!
Despite the recent rise in media attention, there’s still more to do to reduce the stigma of menopause, get people talking, and find ways for women to successfully work throughout their perimenopause and menopausal symptoms. And that’s exactly what we did at Briar’s Hill and St Margaret’s.
Their virtual lunch and learn session, facilitated by Laura Drury, was an opportunity for them to understand how menopause affects not just the person going through it but also the people around them. It was also a way to explore how best to support one another.
We did all of this through some myth-busting, fun quizzes, and lots of open, honest and supportive conversation.
We also explored different things that could be put into place to help those going through perimenopause and menopause, from fans on desks to weekly menopause coffee breaks and everything in between. Also, by having open and honest conversations, those who are yet to experience menopause are better prepared for what to expect and, hopefully, are more able to navigate it positively.
