Growth mindset and the amazing brain at Tolworth Juniors
Lead Happiness Consultant, Dave Keeling, has had lots of great experiences working with staff and pupils at Tolworth Juniors and so jumped at the chance for a return visit to collaborate with Yr 6 to learn about growth mindset.
The day comprised of three 90-minute sessions with three different classes exploring the amazing brain and how having a better understanding of how we think and feel, and how it affects our behaviour, can have a big impact on our learning.
The objectives within that framework were to help the students build confidence and resilience in learning, techniques for overcoming anxiety in stressful situations such as tests, and to motivate them to have fun and develop a positive attitude to learning.
Dave achieved this by combining a fast-paced 90-mins with plenty of audience participation and included:
- A mixture of thinking games, questioning, and curiosity
- The amazing brain breakdown
- The art of memory
And not to mention a little bit of magic!
The students not only had a great time but left the session with a newfound confidence in their abilities, a greater understanding of how they think and learn (and thanks to that little bit of magic) a tinky winky bit of awe and wonder.
